I had a conversation with China Mieville a while ago about why he ended up working for DC instead of Marvel even though he’s more of a Marvel fan, and apparently Marvel wanted him to write Iron Man, which is hilarious if you know CM’s political philosophy (VERY Marxist-leaning), so he pitched them a story about Tony basically losing all his wealth and access to everything and having to rebuild from the gutters, and they went, “eh….maybe not, then…” And then he let DC pay him to reboot Dial H for Hero. (China Mieville is marvelous. Go read The Scar, or Un Lun Dun, or The City & The City. He will also happily talk to you for hours about Dungeons & Dragons or Spider-Man or the state of the fantasy genre.)
